Post-graduate Fellowship Opportunities at the

Orthopedic and Traumatologic Department of

Garcia de Orta Hospital

Pos-graduate Fellowship Program Guidelines
 

1- Introduction

Garcia de Orta Hospital is a 550 bed, governmental central multispeciality hospital and it is attached to the Classic Lisbon University, for MBBS, MS and post-graduate purposes. 

It was inaugurated on September 1991, serves an area with about 400.000 inhabitants and is one of new hospitals the Government built with up-to-date technology and a new entrepreneurial management philosophy.

The Orthopedic and Traumatologic Department, uses the best technologies available in western countries, has 50 beds, including separate orthopedic and trauma wards, each year observe about 11.000 patients, treat at Emergency room about 13.000 and perform about 1.600 surgeries with a mean stay in ward of 5 days.

 

2- Purpose

The post-graduate fellowship program of the Orthopedic and Traumatologic Department of Garcia de Orta Hospital is recognized by the International Center for Orthopaedic Education (ICOE), based in USA and is addressed to foreign and Portuguese senior orthopedic residents and young orthopedic surgeons. 

It is intended to provide knowledge and experience to the fellow with other clinical entities and surgical techniques, in a different context than the one he is used to, and are based on the daily work side-by-side with the surgeons and residents of the Department.

There are no academic component. 

No special examinations is necessary. 

Official language is Portuguese but almost all staff speaks English, French and Spanish.

 

3- Fellowship Offers

The Orthopedic and Traumatologic Department of Garcia de Orta Hospital offers orthopedic training on the following fields, in which our Department is a National reference facility:

a- Pediatric Orthopedics

b- Limb Lengthening and Reconstructive Surgery with Ilizarov Technique

c- Arthroscopy and knee ligament reconstruction

d- Primary and revision THP and TKP

e- Traumatology

f- Hand and Foot Surgery

 

4- Duration of Fellowship

Considering the duration of the fellowship, fellows can chose the following alternatives:

a- Observationship - 1 to 4 weeks.

Observation of the routines of the entire Department including ward, clinics, emergency and operating room, with the possibility of intervene "hands on" as 3rd or 4th surgeon on occasional interventions.

 b- Short Post-graduate Training - 1 to 3 months.

Active work on the routines of one of the above-mentioned units, with the possibility of intervention "hands on" as 3rd or 2nd surgeon on the operating room.

 c- Long Post-graduate Training - 3 to 6 months.

Active work on the routines of one or more of the above mentioned units with the possibility of intervention "hands on" as 2nd or 1st surgeon at the end of the stage, depending on your skills. 

Participation on experimental and clinical research of the department. 

Preparation and presentation of a theme or paper on the clinical sessions of the Department.

 

5- Fellowship facilities

The Department provides the next facilities:

a- Fellowship with financial support:

The Department offers housing and food for two unaccompanied fellows, facilities we got thanks to the generous contribution of Friends League of Garcia de Orta Hospital (housing) and Eurest Portugal (food), which constitutes 2 grants equivalent to about  450 EUR or USD $400/month each.

Fellow will have its own room and will divide a living room, kitchen and bathroom with other fellow. The two fellows pays only the current expenses (water, electricity, gas, laundry and clean up) and must deposit a 200 EUR (USD $173) bail at check in, which will be returned whole, if current expenses are settled, everything is in order and clean at check out. 

Permanence of non-fellows at the apartment is not allowed. 

Lunch and dinner will be supplied free at the hospital restaurant during the fellowship period, including Saturdays and Sundays, in exchange for a meal voucher, furnished by the Department.  

Meal voucher's are personal and in transmissible.  

No stipend is available during fellowship. 

Fellows accompanied by spouses, family or friends can not apply to a financial support. 

Applying to the financial support will limit the dates of the fellowship to availability.

b- Fellowship without financial support:

The Department offer 2 or 3 more positions for fellows without financial support. 

Fellows accompanied by spouses, family or friends can only apply to a fellowship without financial support. 

Fellows  without financial support, can chose their own dates to do the fellowship. 

On this case we can arrange low cost housing next door to the hospital for about 10 EUR/day (USD $9) and food at the hospital for about 8 EUR/day (USD$7), or an apartment a little far away, with cooking facilities for about 200 EUR/month (USD$173).

 

6- Clinical Assignments

Fellows will work side-by-side with surgeons and residents of the Department, but will be supervised by them all time and can not assume a clinical act on patients without its agreement and supervision. 

The supervisor surgeon will be always responsible by the fellow's clinical acts.

Fellows will have a certain service commitment, as do all medical staff of the Department, and must be present on all activities, including clinics, wards, operating room and emergency room, according to a schedule plan.

 

7- Applying to fellowships

To apply to a fellowship position, fellow must send the next documents, by E-mail (nuno.lopes@netvisao.pt) , fax (351-212957004) or mail (Serviço de Ortopedia, Hospital Garcia de Orta, Pragal, 2800 Almada, Portugal), which must reach us in a month:
a- Curriculum Vitae.
b- Letter with your complete identification, identification of the hospital and present occupation, address, phone, fax and E-mail, describing the post-graduate training you intend to do, date of beginning and duration and if you  want to apply to the special fund or not.
c- Passport size photograph.
d- Copy of all your medical degrees.
e- Reference letter from your Director with identification, full address, phone, fax and E-mail, certifying your degree and working qualities.
f- If you want to apply to the financial supported position you must send a document from the administrative authorities of your hospital certifying your total monthly income. 

Fellows accompanied by spouses, family or friends can not apply to a fellowship with financial support.

After receiving the above mentioned documents and after been accepted to the fellowship position with financial support, at arrival the fellow will sign a fellowship contract. 

Fellows with and without financial support will receive a calling letter to be presented to the immigration authorities to obtain the visa and to its Hospital authorities for further facilities.

 

8- Fellowship contract

The fellowship contract binds the fellow with financial support to its commitments and the Department to the obligation of supplying housing and food in the above mentioned terms. 

Any violation to the above mentioned guidelines, namely to points 5a and 6, subjects the fellow to expulsion and bail forfeit without any compensation.

 

9- Certification

If the fellowship is compleated successfully, a attendance certificate will be awarded by the Head of Orthopedic Department. This certificate will mention type and duration of fellowship, activities developed by fellow and his evaluation by all medical staff.

On request, at the end of the fellowship, a special certificate of completion can be send by the International Center for Orthopaedic Education (ICOE).
