When we follow a
road called "varandim mágico", from where we can see an amazing panoramic view,
we find the old settlement of Carvalho, in the right river bank of the brook
which as the same name.
The small town of Carvalho parish
hás as boundaries the parishes of Teixoso, Canhoso, Cantar-Galo, Cortes do Meio
and Verdelhos. It is 4 kilometres away from the local government.
In the beginning
it was called Carvalho village but in 24th August 1989 it was elevated to the
category of small town.
It is formed for the follow locals:
Acinzas, Barreira, Barroca, Cabeço Gordo, Calva, Castinçal, Lameiro da Mouta,
Perdigueiros, Portais, Pouso, Prazo, Rego da Água, S. Domingos, Trapas, Vale de
candeias and Beringueira.
There are two
versions about the etymological origin of this parish name. The first one
states that the name comes from the proliferation of several oaks (Caravalhos)
in the present parish. The second one states that in the
place where would have been oaks in abundance there would have been a remarkable
one, which would have detached among the others, giving, therefore, the name to
the village.
